I believe that games are amazing tools that can bring people together not only to have fun but to assist in educating and socializing. That is why I love making games!

Games I made and my roles

LEGEND

  1. Originator - I conceived the original game idea

  2. Design - Either I designed the entire game by myself or with other game designers. Usually this involves creating game mechanisms, prototyping, brain storming, play testing and iterating on the design

  3. Developer - Using Unity and C#, I developed the game by myself or with other game developers. This sometimes includes implementing 3rd party APIs (like Ad networks)

  4. Producer - I kept track of schedules and tasks and liaised with external parties and performed administrative tasks on behalf of the team

  5. Release - I am in charge of creating the builds and fix any errors that may arise and submit the game into the app stores for public release. I also participate in customer feedback and identifying of live-bugs for future fixes

Calculator: The Game

I always liked the idea of a math based puzzle and created a mini game as part of something else. This proved to be really fun and thus served as a starting point.

The initial concept used standard calculator capabilities and simple math. I needed to figure out a way to improve on that to increase retention and replay value. As a design constraint, I added a limited number of moves and an objective for players to reach. In addition, I added a starting number which allowed me to craft and create puzzles.  After much play testing, the concept of customized buttons arose and freed me up to think of interesting buttons to use in the game.

Calculator: The Game won the Playcrafting 2017 Best Mobile Game award, over 5 million downloads and was featured in both Apple App store and Google play store.

Cognition

COGNITION is my Thesis project that I worked with 4 other classmates. I played the role of the project manager, producer and also managed our community outreach.

We were looking for a unique game play mechanism and we really liked the concept of orbiting bodies. From there we prototyped and found this "walking" game play to be fun and engaging. There were several iterations but after testing and thinking of the platform we were targeting, we settled on 1 simple tap to switch between which cog is rotating.

We wanted something endearing as well and we decided on the hand drawn art style. For the theme, we had several iterations and our original concept was that of planets. However it had a lot of limitations and so we transitioned to a literal hand drawn world of an artist's dream and this gave us a richer narrative and freed us from scientific constraints.

We got selected to be part of the NYU Game Center Incubator was featured by Apple. We also won Playcrafting Best Mobille Game in 2016.

Gutsy

A game about the microbes that make you... you! Gutsy is a card game that was created in collaboration with American Museum of Natural History and in conjunction with an exhibition about Microbes.

I worked with microbiologist Susan Perkins to understand the concept of her exhibition to create gutsy.

Susan's challenges were that it had to be educational and fun. First I had to understand what the exhibition was and the science behind it all. From there I started to focus on elements that had a variety and pitched a few ideas. We landed on microbes in your gut as that sounded fun and started to design game mechanisms.

There were several game mechanisms we tried but we decided on something that is both simple to teach and simple to learn. We did not want the focus to be drawn away from the science in the game.

We also decided to have cute art as a means to attract more players to the game.

Finally, we created the boardgame that was sold in the museum's store. As part of the internship, I also assisted in teaching game design concepts and tested the boardgame with kids that attending STEM summer classes at the museum.

Gutsy received great reviews and was sold out of its print run twice and was considered one of the more successful products released by the museum.
